What’s in a Name?

Those familiar with the work of Neil Howe and William Strauss may have noticed that they refer to what is most commonly called Generation X as the Thirteenth Generation. And while this name hasn’t really stuck with the popular media, it does have some merit. You see, Generation X is the thirteenth generation to have lived under United States rule. But more importantly, some say the Thirteenth Generation derived it’s name from its “reactionary” archetype (for more on Strauss and … Continue reading What’s in a Name?

The PPC…

Years ago, Paul Hawkinson, recruiting industry guru and former editor of The Fordyce Letter, identified 30 steps in the placement process, which he later condensed to 26, as listed here.  Clearly, not all of the steps are required for ALL placements (for instance, if there’s no relo required or the candidate isn’t currently working, certainly there are steps to be skipped).  But you get the gist:  while the talent sourcing and placement process may seem simple, there are actually many individual … Continue reading The PPC…

What goes around…

Late last month, I had the opportunity to attend the New Jersey Staffing Alliance’s Executive Leadership Conference.  For me, one of the highlights of the conference was hearing Dr. Michael Kannisto share his thoughts on the current and future states of talent acquisition and workforce planning.  Dr. Kannisto also discussed the importance of understanding & addressing generational differences within the workplace…a topic I can’t get enough of. Kannisto also referenced William Strauss & Neil Howe’s work on social generations.  For … Continue reading What goes around…

Too Good to Be True?

The latest ADP Employment Report was released showing that 217,000 additional jobs were created in February from January.  This continues to suggest solid growth in employment over the last several months, a welcoming sign that our economy is truly recovering.  The January figures were increased slightly from 187,000 to 189,000 jobs created. The BLS’ Employment Situation for February 2011 is scheduled for release Friday morning.  While the consensus is that the report will also be positive, it is highly unlikely it’ll match the … Continue reading Too Good to Be True?

Poor Planning…

As a highly specialized, regional executive search and staffing firm Haley Stuart Group has deep access to the trends within certain sectors of the labor market.   In particular, we focus on the legal, specialty retail, creative (marketing & communications) and information technology industries and/or professions.  One of the most obvious trends we monitor during a shift in business cycles is the headcount reduction (during a recession) and increase (during a recovery).  The media covers this phenomena ad nauseum. While the trend … Continue reading Poor Planning…

It Takes Two to Tango…

“In a time of drastic change it is the learners who inherit the future.
